You install a website blocker. You add YouTube to the blocklist. You feel good about it.
Then, a few days later, you need to watch one work-related video. You click 'allow for 15 minutes' and promise yourself you'll just watch that one video. But by the time those 15 minutes are up, you've watched six video essays about submarines.
This is not a failure of willpower. This is a failure of design.
The domain-level problem
Most website blockers work by blocking entire domains. When you block YouTube, they block youtube.com. When you block Reddit, they block reddit.com. This seems logical until you realise what it means in practice.
The moment you need access to a single useful page on that site (a tutorial video, a technical subreddit, a specific article), you have to unblock the entire domain. And once the domain is unblocked, every dopamine trap on that site is available again.
The result: you either stay completely blocked from useful content, or you open the floodgates. There's no middle ground.
Why URL-level blocking changes the game
URL-level blocking solves this by allowing you to unblock a single page without unblocking the whole site. You can allow youtube.com/watch?v=abc123 (your work tutorial) while keeping youtube.com/shorts and youtube.com/feed blocked.
This removes the negotiation. You don't have to decide between 'block everything and lose productivity' or 'unblock everything and lose focus'. You get surgical precision: allow what's useful, block what's distracting.
Most focus apps don't offer this because it's technically harder to implement. Domain blocking happens at the DNS or hosts file level, which is simple. URL blocking requires inspecting actual HTTP requests, which is more complex. But the trade-off is worth it if you want focus without giving up the pages you actually need.
The real-world impact
Consider these common scenarios: you need to watch a conference talk on YouTube, read a specific thread on Reddit, or check a GitHub issue. With domain blocking, you have two options: stay blocked and find a workaround (ask a colleague to summarise the video, search for a text version of the Reddit thread), or unblock the whole site.
Most people choose to unblock. And most people end up scrolling. This isn't a character flaw. The site is designed to keep you there, and you've just given it permission to try.
URL-level blocking removes that decision point. You allow the specific URL you need. The rest of the site stays blocked. You watch the conference talk, close the tab, and move on.
What this looks like in practice
When you use a URL-level blocker like Kyte, you add youtube.com to your blocklist as usual. YouTube is now blocked system-wide: the macOS app blocks the site in Safari, Firefox, and other browsers; the Chrome extension blocks it in Chrome.
Then you find a video you need to watch. You copy the URL, add it to your allowlist, and refresh the page. That video loads. But when you try to click on a recommended video or navigate to your feed, you see the block page.
The site is blocked everywhere except the specific page you allowed. You can't accidentally scroll. You can't 'just check the homepage'. The only way to see more of the site is to explicitly add more URLs to your allowlist, which creates just enough friction to break the impulse.
